ICC Cricket World Cup Live: Opening Ceremony of the 11th World Cup

Australia and New Zealand welcome the ICC cricket World Cup after a gap of 23 years. It has been a long wait but Melbourne and Christchurch are finally ready to greet fans and cricketers - present and former - with open arms for the showpiece event. The last time the showpiece 50-over tournament came calling on Australian shores, it was a remarkably different world. White cricket balls and coloured jerseys were introduced for the first time, Sachin Tendulkar vs Shane Warne duels were unheard of, South Africa were coming out of exile and . In 23 years since, a lot has changed but the sheer passion for the sport here has remained intact - a fact Melbourne and Christchurch will highlight in Thursday's opening ceremony. (Fixtures | Teams | Players | Venues | History)

Got an opinion? Have your say at myvoice@ndtv.com. Also tweet using @cricketNDTV. Best views will feature here.

The main event will begin from 1330hrs IST but festivities have already begun with local performances. Get the latest here:

* At the Melbourne Cricket Ground - not too far from the venue for the opening ceremony, the English team is out in full strength for their training session. In the midst of the sweat and toil, a few players were also seen cracking jokes making for quite a jovial mood here.

* Breaking: Major news from the warmup matches today - Ireland stun Bangladesh by four wickets. West Indies barely beat Scotland - by three wickets.

* The World Cup trophy has had quite a journey in the last one year or thereabouts. From flying high in a hot air balloon, skydiving and meeting Rolling Stones to shark diving and traveling around the world, the trophy has had a gala time being the most sought-after thing in international cricket.

* While festivities and celebrations are all fine, the battles will begin from Saturday (February 14). Australians enter the tournament as the top-ranked team but they had been the best in the 2011 edition as well before India overtook the side in the ICC rankings after winning in Mumbai. (Read more here)

* Did you know? A devastating earthquake had struck Christchurch in 2011. The opening ceremony here today would also raise a toast to the Kiwi spirit and how the city rebuilt itself again.

* Reports from Down Under suggest fans in both cities started coming in as early as 1400hrs (local, 0330hrs IST) for the ceremony. The events are free for the public.

* Breaking: Australia captain has been ruled out of the team's first ODI against England. (Read more)

* Did you know? The 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand had a number of firsts. It was the first time coloured jerseys were used in the history of the tournament. It was also for the first time that white balls and the black sight screens were used to assist batsmen. This was the first time that the World Cup was taking place in the southern hemisphere and was the first time that Pakistan won the tournament. Unfortunately for Pakistan fans, the team has failed every time since and has also not been able to defeat India in the event. (Also read: India favourites against Pakistan once again, say Gavaskar and Laxman)

* Melbourne: It's a pleasant Thursday evening here with the mercury around 21C. There is a gentle breeze above and a boisterous energy on the ground.

* Christchurch: Kiwi fans can expect legends like Sir Richard Hadlee, Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum here.

* Christchurch: Many fans have already started marking their spots at the North Hagley Park to watch the ceremony as closely as possible. According to New Zealand Herald, many hundreds came earlier than officials expected but no one is really complaining. Deck chairs, blankets, coolers - you name it, they have it!

* It is beginning to heat up in both Melbourne and Christchurch. There is a palpable sense of excitement here, and why not? Locals feel cricket is in the air and can almost whiff the brilliant aroma of cricket greatness around them.

One is a city of over four million while the other houses close to 400,000. Melbourne and Christchurch may be different in terms of demographics but the two cities are premier centers of culture and cricket in their respective countries and are determined to showcase the two. Indeed a night of revelry and party can be expected before the 14 teams, 210 players and billions of fans battle for the biggest prize in cricket.

What to expect in Melbourne?

From the razzmatazz of music and brilliance of fireworks to David Warner boxing a kangaroo - a symbol of Australia's symbol of sporting culture, Melbourne is ready and how. As a city, it has hosted spectacular ceremonies for international sporting events in the past. The city of over four million was the first in the southern hemisphere to host the Olympics - in 1956. More recently, it hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games and welcomes tennis and F1 superstars each year as well.

As such, many feel the red carpet for sportspersons is never really rolled back here. On Tuesday, it would be the turn of cricketers - both present and former - to walk under the spotlight. Adding to the festivities would be local artists -- pop star Jessica Hilda Mauboy, singers Tina Arena, Nathaniel and Daryl Braithwaite as well as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra - at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

What to expect in Christchurch?

Nearly 2400 kilometers away, the Kiwis are planning an equally spectacular show. Weathermen have predicted dismal weather but expect no gloom on the ground.

The event here will begin from 1830 hrs (local time, 11 AM IST) with roving entertainers and Kiwi cricket legends welcoming the world here. The main event - which begins from 2100 hrs local time- will put New Zealand's culture and love for cricket to the fore. (Also read: Security scare ahead of tournament)

The city also promises a dazzling display of fireworks - one that locals would not have witnessed here before. While alcohol is not permitted here, according to New Zealand's tourism website - an exciting party towards the end will end the grand event.

Ready, steady, go!

The opening ceremony for the previous edition of the World Cup - in Dhaka - was the most expensive in cricket's history at close to US $30 million. Australia and New Zealand are sparing no expense to topple that figure and leave the world spellbound. "The ICC Cricket World Cup is returning to Australia for the first time in 23 years and Melbourne is truly honoured to host the opening event," Victoria's minister for tourism and major events, John Eren, said.

While Melbourne Cricket Ground will host both the opening ceremony as well as the final on March 29, the other contests would be spread over 14 venues - seven each in Australia and New Zealand.

It is going to be a month and a half of hits, misses, emotions and celebrations. And before handing over the baton to England for the 2019 World Cup, Australia and New Zealand would look to set the bar higher than ever before.

As such, many feel the red carpet for sportspersons is never really rolled back here. On Tuesday, it would be the turn of cricketers – both present and former - to walk under the spotlight. Adding to the festivities would be local artists -- pop star Jessica Hilda Mauboy, singers Tina Arena, Nathaniel and Daryl Braithwaite as well as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra – at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground.

I would urge everyone to support Team India for World Cup 2015: Sachin Tendulkar

Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar on Saturday said fans must stand by the Indian team during the World Cup since there will surely be tough times and obstacles in their title defence.

“Obviously you want them to go out and thrash the opposition and win each and every match but that is not possible. Sometimes you have to accept defeat and that can also be a learning experience in a tournament like World Cup,” Tendulkar said at an MRF event.

“There are going to be difficult moments, there are going to be obstacles along the way but not just the team, if you all are together, it becomes inspiring for the players to move forward, knowing that the nation is not sitting on top of the head but the nation is moving ahead along with it. I would urge everyone to support our team.

“Earlier I batted for India on the field, now I continue to bat for India off the field. Something that really matters to a sportsman is genuine support and that is what I would like to extend.”

Tendulkar said the upcoming World Cup will be a new experience for him as he won’t be part of it, having featured in six editions of the cricketing extravaganza.

“Being a World Cup ambassador is truly an honour and it has happened for the second time. Last time I was ambassador and we played the 2011 World Cup and I was actually part of it. This time I am not. I am really looking forward to this experience because this is the first time that I won’t be playing. It’s a new experience for me,” he said.

The batting maestro said his life has come a full circle.

“World Cup journey started for me in 1983. I watched India win an excellent finals against West Indies and then Kapil paaji holding that beautiful trophy in the balcony of Lords. The next experience which was even greater, I was a ball boy at the Wankhede stadium and I got to see all the superstars of Indian cricket from a close vicinity.

“And then to become an ambassador of 2011 and 2015 World Cup it feels like I have done a full circle,” he said.

Tendulkar, who bid good bye to cricket in November 2013, was part of India’s World Cup-winning squad in 2011 when the Men in Blue carried the Master Blaster on their shoulders at the Wankhede Stadium.

Leading tyre maker MRF, one of the global sponsors for the cricket World Cup, launched a special edition World Cup tyre ZSport and Tendulkar said his association with the company has been quite old.

“My association with MRF started when I was a 12 year old wanting to become a fast bowler. Luckily before leaving from Mumbai to Chennai, my brother Ajit told me to carry the kitbag just incase I needed to bat.

“In retrospect that was the wisest decision because the first session itself Dennis (Lillee) came to me and he said continued…

Watch out for these glamorous, super-devoted Wags

As the players look to seize the moment on the big stage, their partners will grab attention from the stands with their style and smile. HT brings you the glamorous side of the World Cup.

ANUSHKA SHARMA They are the perfect fire-and-ice couple! When the combustible Virat Kohli had a form slump during the England tour last year, the presence of his girlfriend, Bollywood star Anushka Sharma, was blamed. But Kohli gave a fitting reply to his critics in Australia, sizzling with the bat and blowing a kiss to his delighted partner in the stands every time he got a century.

SAKSHI DHONI
The former student of hotel management is no longer the beaming presence in the stands she was at the IPL, but constantly travels with the India skipper. The couple was introduced to each other by a common friend while she was working in Kolkata. They kept in touch and eventually tied the knot in a private ceremony. However, she seems to have lost her WAG No 1 crown to Anushka.

AYESHA MUKHERJEE She is a global citizen, someone with Bengali and British roots who lives in Melbourne. Shikhar Dhawan’s wife is 10 years older to him, but they have similar interests — tattoos, bikes and sports. Ayesha is an amateur kickboxer as well.

MAYANTI LANGER The former model is seen more often on TV than husband, all-rounder Stuart Binny. The sports presenter on leading channels over the last few years mainly handles football. They took the plunge a couple of years ago, and Binny’s star seem to be on the rise since then.

YEHALI SANGAKKARAIt was a romance which bloomed during their school days in Kandy. Kumar Sangakkara dated his childhood sweetheart Yehali for more than eight years before they got hitched. “In my case, it (marriage) keeps me grounded and gives me a base where I can think my life out, refocus and renew energies for the next day,” says the ex-Sri Lanka skipper.

KYLY CLARKE
A model and television presenter, the 33-year-old Kyly married Australian skipper Michael Clarke in 2012.Apart from a few acting stints, she also runs an interior design business. She was also a contestant on reality TV show Dancing with the Stars.

DANIELLE DE VILLIERS
The most valuable player in the game proposed to his girlfriend at the most famous monument of love, the Taj Mahal during the 2013 IPL. AB de Villiers, the SA skipper, tied the knot with Danielle a few months later. The courtship was long, the couple having met eight years ago in De Villiers’ father’s farm and remained friends.

DANI WILLIS
Steve Smith is easily the hottest property in Australian cricket at the moment. But the player credits girlfriend Dani Willis for his success. A law and commerce student at Sydney’s Macquarie University, Willis also makes sure Smith is never short of practice, she gives him occasional throw downs in the hotel lobby.

JESSICA BRATICH
They are truly a fast couple. Mitchell Johnson, currently the world’s fastest bowler is married to a former world karate champion. It is not just reflected glory for Jessica, who has her own fashion label.

LEE FURLONG Shane Watson’s wife gets the ringside view in more ways than one. She is a presenter with Fox Sports. Lee was once voted the world’s No 1 WAG, ahead of Victoria Beckham. Who said football is always bigger than cricket! It has been a long and draining tour of Australia. The Indian players will hope the BCCI relents and lets their wives and girlfriends accompany them at some point. If there is a U-turn, the likes of Bollywood diva Anushka Sharma will add spice to the tournament.

CANDICE FALZON
Australian opener David Warner can do with a calming presence in life. His current flame, who is of Maltese origin, too is in the fitness business. She is a professional ironwoman competitor, and a model. She also happens to be a trained lifesaver, like those on the TV series Baywatch. A sizzling duo.

JESSICA TAYLOR
England will miss Kevin Pietersen’s services in the World Cup Down Under, which means his wife and and award winning popsinger Jessica Taylor will also not be under the spotlight. Taylor was the member of the all-girl band Liberty X apart from modelling appearances on TV shows.

Key Facts of Cricket World Cup 2015 - Factbox

Key Facts of Cricket World Cup 2015 - Factbox on the 11th edition of the cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand from February 14-March 29.

KEY FACTS

* The first men's cricket World Cup was held in England in 1975, four years after the first recognised one-day international had been played in 1971, on the fifth day of a washed out test between Australia and England in Melbourne.
* West Indies won the first two tournaments, beating Australia in 1975 and England in 1979 and then lost the 1983 final to India, but have not reached another final since.
* Allan Border's Australia won the first of their four titles in 1987, sparking a period of dominance by the side in both one-day and test cricket for the next 20 years.
* India also won the 2011 tournament. Pakistan (1992) and Sri Lanka (1996) are the only other winners.
* New Zealand and Australia will host 21 pool matches each, among 14 venues, seven in each country. It is the second time the two countries have co-hosted the tournament, having previously done so in 1992.

* They can possibly reach the final in Melbourne without having played any of their games in Australia. The two co-hosts are in the same pool and play that match on February 28 in Auckland.

Pakistan Team Wears 1992 Color Kit Cricket World Cup 2015. The official kit of the Pakistan Cricket team for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2015 was revealed on Wednesday 14 January at an event in Lahore.

Zimbabwe have announced their 15-man squad for ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. The squad, led by Elton Chigumbura, largely features players who have performed well for Zimbabwe over the last few years. Hamilton Masakadza, who made his ODI debut way back in 2001, will feature in his first World Cup. Prosper Utseya, who has been banned from bowling off-breaks alone due to a suspect action, has also been included.

Chief selector, Givemore Makoni, said "He (Utseya) is our mystery spinner, bowling mediums and cutters, and his experience will be vital for us."

Newly appointed coach, Dav Whatmore, said that he was happy with the squad and added, "I've personally spoken to all those who missed out and assured them that they are still part of the future."

Vusi Sibanda, who has played 119 ODIs for Zimbabwe, was omitted from the squad. Sibanda though has been named as one amongst the 5 non-traveling reserves. The others in that list are John Nyumbu, Brian Vitori, Malcolm Waller and Cephas Zhuwao.

"Vusi is unlucky to miss out but we've gone with the guys in form," said Makoni and re-iterated the same point when asked about the exclusion of left-arm pacer, Brian Vitori.

"The bowlers we picked ahead of him have done better. Panyangara and Chatara are the choices we've gone with," he said.
